Subject: DOOM AND GUS NATIVE SUPPORT (3D)
The following is being reproduced from the "official" Doom FAQ
by Hank Leukart AP641@CLEVELAND.FREENET.EDU
THIS FAQ IS NOT WRITTEN BY ID SOFTWARE
[
CHAPTER 4: When is the release date of DOOM?
DOOM was first said to be released in "the third quarter of 1993."
id Software has now delayed the release date until December 10th, 1993.
They said that they needed to delay the release to ensure a quality product.
Also, they said part of the delay has been caused by putting the DOOM work
aside while they worked on a Super Nintendo version of Wolfenstein 3-D.
CHAPTER 7: What will I need to run DOOM?
DOOM will require a 386sx IBM compatible computer running DOS, VGA
(320x200x256) graphics, and 2mb of RAM. DOOM will support the Adlib,
SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster Pro, SoundBlaster 16, Roland Sound Canvas,
and the Pro Audio Spectrum (in native mode).
You will be happy to know that id is working hand-in-hand with
both Gravis and Forte to make sure the game supports the GUS in native
mode. "If it can be done, we will do it!" says Jay Wilbur of id
Software. (jay@idsoftware.com)
Jay Wilbur speaks on the topic of GUS 3D support:
"Size limitations for the shareware version and new technology
on the horizon (for newer, cooler games) are the reasons we may not put
the GUS 3D support in. The amount of sounds it requires would eat too
much disk space for us to handle. Listen, we want to support the GUS
as much as you want us to support the GUS.
Our sound code guy has committed to getting the board up and
running. Gravis and Forte have provided resources beyond the call of
duty to help us get the board up and running. We want to get the
board up and running.
The fact remains that something outside our control (code size,
our inexperience with the board and deadlines, etc.) may (possibly,
perhaps, unlikely but maybe) prevent us from providing native support.
If that happens, nobody will be sadder than us. We will miss bundling
opportunities with Gravis, sales opportunities with GUS users, etc.
This is not a pleasant thought for us.
Please try to understand our position. We want to support the GUS
as much, perhaps even more, than you do. We will do everything in our
power to put the support in. If everything works out (and it looks like
it will--the game is running with native GUS support in right now) the
code will be in. If the code is not in, please don't come and try to kill
us, we did everything we could to make it happen."
The shareware episode of DOOM MAY EXCEED 1.44mb in compressed form,
and the "commercial" episodes (together) will be somewhere in the
neighborhood of 10mb, uncompressed.
]
**UPDATE** THE AUTHOR OF THE FAQ E MAILED ME AND WROTE THAT IT LOOKS
LIKE DOOM "WILL" SUPPORT THE GUS IN NATIVE MODE. HOWEVER, BECAUSE OF
SIZE LIMITATIONS THE SUPPORT WILL NOT BE IN 3D. HE ALSO NOTES THAT THIS
CAN CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND DECEMBER 10

Subject: GUS w/SB
I have just successfully gotten my soundblaster to work in conjunction with
my GUS.
If anyone is wondering the best way to do it, I would recommend SB on IRQ7,
I/O 220, DMA 1, and the GUS on GUSIRQ11, MIDI-SBOS IRQ 5, DMA 3 and port 240.
Okay, now here is the wierd thing that is happening with my stereo setup. I
have the gus line-out going through a ground loop isolator, and then into the
stereo. The stereo has multiple modes (AM, FM, CD, Tape 1/2) and whatever
input I use, I can still hear the GUS! So, when I hooked the SB into the CD
port, and the GUS into Tape 1, I push CD and I can hear both SB and GUS.
This is kinda neat, I don't know if it should be happening, but it is.
If anyone is wondering why I want to have a SB in the machine when I have a
GUS - well, I can't get Syndicate to work with any emulator, and Ultima 7 SBOS
sounds AWFUL!

GREAT game!!! zow!
during setup, use 'advanced setup' to
configure for general midi (330 port), and
soundblaster, if you use the
emulation. (actually, you get a neat
MEGAMEGAEM CRITICAL ERROR
message if you set it up for sbpro.)
anyway, let er' rip.
I highly suggest loading with /F22, too,
otherwise stuckey scenes sound awful.
pardon any typos, I can't see a thing, and certainly

Well, since I have a few games that I've not seen mentioned, I'll go ahead.
The 7th Guest. Of course it works with the AIL drivers, but it's neat to
have SBOS, AIL, Megaem/SCC and Megaem/MT32 support!
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego Deluxe (CD version). This game
didn't work with any version of SBOS. It would work for a while, then
lock up. And when I was able to finish a game, I never got any promotions
I had comming. But it works great now with MT32 support with music,
voices and sound effects. The only remaining problem is the sounds it
uses for dialing the phone and pushing buttons is WAY off. Not even a
1Meg GUS and the -f22 switch work. I'm going to see if I can figure out
which patches it uses and create a custom ULTRASND.INI file for it. If
anyone else is interested, I'll let you know my results (just send mail.)
Other than that, it works great.
Another game that never worked with SBOS is Earl Weaver Baseball II (I
ordered it from EA with the GUS.) It works great with Megaem, but it
doesn't allow you to have MT32 support with SB DAC support. So you get
the speach and a few sounds through the PC speaker.
Another game with the same problem is Stunts. Although it works great
with SBOS, you can't get MT32 with SB DAC support. But since it works
super with SBOS, it's not a problem. Just would have been nice though to
have a MIDI soundtrack for the game. Oh well.
Prince of Persia I works fantastic.
And last but not least is Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (CD game
again.) Since the game uses ALL digitized music and voice, it works well
with Megaem SB DAC support. It also work just perfect with SBOS, but for
those that can run SBOS, Megaem should do the trick and it sounds just as
good. Can't tell the difference.

$
$ Has anyone been able to get Rebel Assault to work with the GUS. It has GUS
$ listed, but I can't get through the open screen. Any suggestions would be
$ greatly appreciated. I have a 1 meg GUS on a 486/DX33 and a Philips 205
$ CDROM drive. I have tried it with EMM386 on and off with no change.
I finally got it to work. First of all, you need the DOS4GW.EXE from
Shadow Caster. It is v1.8. The one that comes with RebAss is v1.92 and it
crashes with a protection fault at the calibration screen, even with just
himem.sys loaded. Anyway, get the DOS4GW that came with Shadow, and start
RebAss this way:
1. Log to the CD drive
2. Type "c:\shadow\dos4gw assault /c7 /i11 /b220 /x2 /s2000000"
Adjust the path and the port/irq settings according to your setup.
This ought to get you up and running, but BOY, is the music sick! It is
sampled from the movie soundtracks, and sounds like 8bit, 11Khz mono. It
really sounds terrible, like you are hearing it over the phone. Moreover,
the game tries to play them directly off the CD, without loading into
memory first. The CD drive introduces audible warbles and jitters every
time it is accessed. Unlistenable!
Summary: I am taking it back and getting RtZ. RebAss is a waste of time,
and looks for all the world like a CD put together under a very short
deadline, and whatever shortcuts could be taken, were taken. It gets an
F.
Update: dsd.es.com's mailer barfed, and in the time it took for me to get
the bounce and repost, I finally got in touch with Lucas Arts via e-mail.
They know of the problem. It is not GUS-specific. The DOS4GW extender
they used is broken badly. They have several PCs at Lucas Arts that won't
run the game with the DOS4GW that ships on the CD. If you crash at the
calibrating screen, you will not be able to run the game, period, until a
new DOS4GW is obtained. The tech that responded from Lucas' AOL address
(identified only as "Tabby" in his .sig), said that it would be several
weeks before a patch was available. He advised me to return the game
before Egghead's return deadline passed by.

Hi GUSers,
Now i CAN't play second reality .....
I startup the demo and then i get the setup screen, after that what ever
i do he just crash. I mean a black screen with no music. It doesn't matter
if i boot clean or just with no memory managers, emm386, qemm386 and
if i select NO music or gravis ultrasound.
I have:
486dx-33 with 16 Mb RAM
420 Mb WD HDD
Diamond SPeedstar 24X (wd90c31 chipset ... 1 waitstate already)
SVGA color monitor
QIC80 tape streamer
3,5" drive
BIG tower
250 Watt power supply
I have tried your demo on other computer and they all worked well.
One computer did have the diamond speedstar (so i don't think it's that).
Also 486 or 420 HDD isn't exceptional (tried others).
The ONLY thing i can think of is the 16 Mb of RAM, but i do know this
in a week or so (because a friend does have 20 Mb).
PLEASE EMAIL back to thomas@hammer.hacktic.nl

I have an Adaptec 1542B in my system and have not had any problems with Mega-Em.
I did move the 1542B to 0x334. This does require a change in the SCSI BIOS.
You can download the alternate BIOS from Adaptec's BBS (408-945-7727) and burn
your own EPROM or order an EPROM direct from Adaptec (800-442-7274). I
downloaded the BIOS and burned an EPROM. The only change required (other than
changing the EPROM) is to tell the ASPI4DOS.SYS driver where the board is now
located. This is done with a command line switch /p334 or something close to this.
I understand that the 1542C is fully software configurable and does not require
the buring of any EPROMs.
Hope this information is useful.

Okay. I finally solved my problem with the new Windows driver. It
turned out that the old ULTRASND.INI some how found its way to stay in

noticed that the notes dropping problem has not been completely fixed,
and I experienced more notes dropping under linear volume mode than log
volume mode.
To gravis: How about a new PlayMIDI w/ linear volume response?
